“What’s the difference between ‘fare well’ and ‘farewell,’  Herbert asked Muriel. 

“If someone’s given fair treatement, he should fare well, ” she told him.

If he’s not,” she continued, “Then he should rather say ‘farewell.”   

“Hey,” her beau replied, “That’s all anyone can do.” 

“The distinction between one word and two,” she pointed out, is not insignificant.”   

“I’m so happy you understand that,” replied she, “Especially considering our circumstances.”
