The Family

When I was growing up

My grandmother always lived in

West Pittston in northeastern Pennsylvania

Everyone in that part of

Pennsylvania had such a thick

Coal miner hard core accent

Grandma’s hydrangeas and

Heriloom tomatoes were

As much a highlight of my

Youth as were her Rosary,

Anachronistic vocabulary, and

Boiled hot dogs.

I can’t have those days back

But I can keep them

In my memory, photographs,

And imagination, each of which

Can be used as a

Stepping stone between then

And now
