The Strangers

I see the same people

Daily on a train.

There’s always one Stranger

After another, occasionally

Making subtle furtive eye contact.

There’s never much to say beyond

‘Hello’, ‘Please’, Thank you’,

Uttered as perfunctorily as

Our tickets are stamped.

It’s all the etiquette of anonymity.

We’re all mere social security numbers with faces.
