The Fourth Of July In Hilldale

The Fourth of July in Hilldale

My father’s kin always get together

Ever since the summer of ’60

Back then the wafting

Aroma of coffee and bagels,

Pasta, seafood, meat,

Pastries and fruit

Was brought to us by World War I veterans

As Alaska’s and Hawaii’s stars

Had barely made their way onto

The flags that waved

Upon people’s porches.

The menus have since

Been passed down

From World War II

To Korea, to Viet Nam.

Pretty much the same menu

~The gist of it anyway~

Is passed down in a

Gradually altered landscape,

Differing pop culture and slang terms

A barrage of incompatible accents

And recipes.

K.P. duty never changes though.
