Second Chance

There once was an island

So beautiful and serene

Where the young were

Allowed to go

On condition they

Did not break the

Only rule.

It was separated

From the mainstream

Of civilization

By a vast expanse of ocean

Which spread as far

As the eye could see.

Could they start anew?

Could they have a

Fine new world,

A second chance

For mankind?

The leaders found

A seashell in the sand

And blew into it

As into a horn

As simultaneously

The waves behind them

Washed away all traces

Of their past world.

In the forgeground lurked

A strange unfamiliar beast,

Unlike any they had seen before.
