“Nellie and Bessie were identical,” Tadhg told Roísín.

“Wasn’t Bessie English?, Roísín asked.

“You’re thinking of Patty and Cathy,” Tadhg said. “Nellie was incapable of taking things seriously and Bessie had no sense of humor, so they agreed to go through life as one person.

“Oh,” Roísín said. “Sort of what John Lennon should have done with Paul McCartney.”

“The catch was,” Tadhg said, “They couldn’t always be together and it didn’t work out well separately, so it drove people nuts. To this day they haven’t recuperated from the mess they made.”

“Those experiments are always so risky,” Roísín said.
