Music And Language

  • Fred was learning to play the guitar and Myrtle was learning to speak Italian.  All day long his ‘Do re mi fa so la ti’s were competing with her ‘Sto stai sta stiamo state stanno’s.  Aeolian, Dorian, Ionian, Locrian, Lydian, and Mixolydian reminded her of the names of foreign countries.  It turns out they’re Scales, the way Indicative, Subjunctive, Conditional, Imperative, and all the others are verb tenses.  “I see that music and language are a lot alike,” she said.  “Yes, they are,” he agreed.
